[caption id="attachment_2058" align="aligncenter" width="490"] Sarah Baum[/caption] South Africa’s top female surfers all set to end the year in style in the second edition of the SSA Women’s Pro in Cape Town\, Jeffrey’s Bay and Durban on Sunday There is still time to enter the second edition of the SSA Women’s Pro which will take place at three different venues on Sunday. Surfing South Africa have extended the closing date to Thursday November 22nd and surfers who want to compete can do so online at www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za. Over 60 girls have already entered and with the surfing year winding to a close this contest is not only an important one for those surfers in the running for 2012 Pro Surf Tour honours but also gives every competitor the chance to win a spot prize or share some of the R7500 in prize money on offer at each event. The largest entry is in Durban where top international campaigner Sarah Baum\, SA Under 20 champion Heidi Palmboom\, former two time World Masters Champion Heather Clark\, and former national junior team members Nikita Kekana\, Nicole Pallet and Chanelle Botha head up a strong field. The Durban contest is scheduled to get under way at 8am on Sunday at the Bay of Plenty. In Cape Town\, Tanika Hoffman\, who won both the Open and Under 20 divisions at the first Women’s Pro at Long Beach\, will be aiming at securing the double and the 2012 Under 20 Pro Surf Tour title. Other top surfers in the Cape Town field are Holly Armstrong\, Women’s Day champion Danielle Johnson and talented up and coming surfers Nina Woermann and Anoush Zakarian. Double World SUP medal winner Anna Notten has also entered the event. Surfers must meet at Long Beach Kommetjie at 8am to determine the venue for the Cape Town contest. Top Eastern Province surfer Faye Zoetmulder\, who suffered a horrific leg fracture almost a year ago\, will make her return to competitive surfing at Kitchen Windows in Jeffrey’s Bay on Sunday. The field includes two recently crowned SA Junior champions in Gina Smith and Crystal Hulett as well as former SA Junior Team member Emma Smith and 2011 SA Under 15 Champion Tahra Uren. Contestants will meet at 8am at Kitchen windows in J Bay on Sunday. All three venues feature 1A rated PST events for Open Women\, Under 20 and U16’s. There is R2 500 in prize-money at stake in each division at each event while the Rookies\, who have not previously represented their respective Provinces or competed in a national event before\, will win prizes.

We will be keeping with general etiquette and reasonably moral behaviour patterns that most mothers would agree to. This year we are hoping for great waves again\, so that we can run the 3 simultaneous contests again. Last year some of you ended up doing the equivalent of a surfing triathlon. I bet that Gary van Rooyen\, at times\, was wishing he was surfing in NB flyers\, as he ran between breaks\, it is thought that he did the equivalent of a half marathon. There is so much more to the Ross Taylor contest\, than just surfing. It is the only surf contest where surfing comes second to the vibe of the event. Saturday night is beeeg with 3 bands\, Little Kings\, Dividable Grand and Rapid Auto Fire. Not forgetting DJ supreme Alan Sass. I am expecting some really shaky legs at Sundays final heats. Another firm favourite is the Auction Saturday night\, with auctioneer Deon Bing\, well known KFM surf reporter. This year we have a special item from Twigs’s girlfriend Kate Lovemore\, Kate has kindly agreed to send us one of her bikini’s with a signed photo\, I believe this going to be the hottest contended lot\, and is guaranteed to help fill the hospice coffers. This gesture definitely puts Kate in pole position as the Garden route’s favourite surfer. Unfortunately for Twiggy\, if wishes to redeem his title\, he will have to bring so many items of clothing from his wardrobe\, that the evenings proceedings\, would have to look like a Church Fete Second Hand Clothing Jumble Sale. Sorry Grant\, in the Garden Route\, we are not very deep. But to carry on in deep reflection\, I was thinking more of the origins of the bikini and its influence on the world in general\, and on surfing in particular\, I feel that a general vote of gratitude should be extended to the French nation for the invention of this particular piece of attire\, that has brought pleasure and comfort to millions around the globe. Granted\, like any great invention there have been cases of misuse and abuse\, especially by the Northern European Germanic nations and their complete and total disregard for the unwritten age restriction requirements attached to the bikini\, how do we convey to them that it is just not suitable addition to the closet of any septo/octo or nonogenarian\, no matter how much in shape they may think they are in. I know that there have been blatant attacks on the bikini\, the mono-kini\, and tango\, from Brasil\, while at first glance may have seemed a great improvement\, does just not step up to the plate in class\, not to mention support\, and I will not even go into the diabolical ill fated stick-kini. All in all apart from a Faux pas or two when it comes to the use of cheese and garlic for aphrodisiac purposes\, with the bikini\, they got it dead on right. Alas\, again I need to revert to my original train of thought\, and the usefulness of the aforementioned garment\, which have been many and varied up until now. I know of no other cases where the bikini has been used in such an effective and positive way to help alleviate the suffering of the terminally ill. So on behalf of hospice I extend my thanks to Kate once again\, may your fan-page expand\, exponentially. Request for Caution: Buffalo Bay is a pristine environment and arguably one of the top beach destinations in the world. Please take care with the natural surrounds especially the local flora and fauna. We want the locals to invite us back again next year. Unlike the Oyster Festival\, no molluscs will be harmed in the running of the Ross Taylor Surf Contest. The only pollution we want to see is the noise pollution from the bands\, Saturday night. The Contest: Response has been brilliant with the entries pouring in\, and it seems like there are so many Capetonians heading into Knysna\, there have been concerns of minor cases of xenophobia\, abounding at the local breaks. Don’t worry lads and lasses\, history has shown that the call of the Atlantic is strong enough for the majority of them to go home again. The SUP windgat surfing division\, is nearly full. We will also have our fair share of surf personalities coming back again this year. Sean Holmes\, Andy Marr\, Charlie Reitz are definitely coming\, and they are not just coming to make up the numbers. The rumours are also flying around that Twiggy is going to make the trip too\, so if anyone sees him\, please let him know that this is the plan. Entries for the SUP 8km race are looking good\, there is also a cruiser/kids division for 11ft 6 and shorter. Other family favourites are the sandcastle\, fun run/walk\, beach volley ball\, fire dancers\, drum circle\, and other general Buffs beach fun. Our most important division is the development-grommet divisions. These guys are the future of the sport\, and this fun intro into their first contest (for some) is something Ross would really have cherished. Predicted Surf contions: Long range weather forecasters are not known to be the most honest of individuals. I bet Simon Gear even used to lie to his Mom. We will be running the 3 surf arenas again\, so the chance are extremely good for a slight easterly 2-3m meter swell with light warm offshore bergwind conditions. Predicted Party Conditions: The Knysna locals have the reputation of being rather slow off the mark\, but after three years of practising they are determined to make this years party the “party of the decade”. Extreme enthusiasm is going to be shown for the occasion. Judging Criteria: What more can be said for a contest where the “one legged flying pelican” is the highest scoring manoeuvre\, as well as judges having the freedom and legal jurisdiction to deduct points for bad behaviour and dodgy dress sense. Overview: The fourth contest and three years after the passing of Ross\, to those who knew him\, this weekend is a special time to honour a friend and fellow surfer. To those of you who never met him\, it is my wish that when you leave you will take a small amount of\, The Spirit of Ross\, running through your veins. Ross was all about the love\, the stoke\, and the surf. To KYSNA HOSPICE\, there is not one person I know who has not had a close encounter with cancer\, to somebody they know and love. I while I hope that none of us will ever need their services\, history tells us differently. I salute your dedication to helping those with little hope\, it is a privilege to be involved in this weekend. Safety: We have a Red Cross tent on the beach and NSRI is on call. Accomodation: Peter Grace can be contacted for house and flat rentals Tel 044-383 0038 Cel 082 361 8208 buffelsbaai@kingsleymail.co.za. CHECK OUT FACE BOOK : Ross Taylor Benefit Surf Contest PS: I have been asked to explain the reasons for the seemingly arbitrary naming of the newsletters. In actual fact none of the names are arbitrary; for example this weeks one “Quebec” is a really cool word\, to repeat at different speeds\, and tones\, and done often enough will cheer you up from even the most dark and dismal depression. Try it out for yourselves! But more than that\, it is the home province of Canada’s most successful\, popular and loved musical sensation\, Celine Dion. And with that in mind there is a bottle of Captain Morgan going to the first person who on Saturday night gets up on stage\, and sings “Because You Loved Me”\, reasonably in key\, off course. Added to this will be a 2 litre Coke\, if you get the audience to join in. p>facebook.com/rosstaylorsurfcontest
