Even when Dale’s surfing, he’s still having a ball

THIS week I caught up with friend, surf buddy and South African cricketer Dale Steyn about what surfing in summer in Cape Town means to him.

Dale, better known for playing in Tests, T20 internationals and ODIs for the Proteas, is also a regular Muizenberg local.
“I live five minutes from Muinenberg, so I guess that contributes a lot to why it’s my local spot. But let’s be honest, everyone who’s surfed there on a good day will say it’s the most fun place to surf. Great vibes, good people — the way it should be!” says Steyn.

When Dale is taking a break from being one of the best fast bowlers of his generation, he enjoys refuelling on a post-dawnie surfer’s sandwich (chicken mayo, bacon and tomato) from a local restaurant.

One of the most consistent spots in Cape Town is Long Beach, Kommetjie, where we have had a couple of fun sessions and which Dale recommends as a step up from Muizenberg.

“I enjoy Long Beach as a top spot when it’s on. It’s a little more in my comfort zone, but still powerful enough to really get the heart racing.”

With the Western Cape’s beautiful coastline, Dale reckons you can’t go wrong with spending summer in Cape Town. He also considers his longboard perfect for the season and is content with a fun, sunny surf in his boardies.

Cape Town is full of exciting activities year round, so I asked Dale about his top must-see places for surfers and non-surfers alike. “Kalk Bay on the weekend is always fun. Llandudno is my favourite beach in Cape Town, and if you have enough skill you can also try to surf the famous ‘gat’ there. I just watch from the beach; it can get pretty beeeeeg!”

We all know that surfing can rack up quite an appetite, even more so for a few sundowners. The obvious choice is Camp’s Bay. However, Dale recommends trying Hout Bay for a change.

“Chapman’s Peak Hotel is just amazing with a great view. A simple beer or beer shandy works perfectly.” Dale also enjoys fishing, but suggests trying the Cape’s great wine farms and restaurants. “I’ve travelled the world and can confidently say that Cape Town has some of the best.”
