Join us for the book launch of Going in! By Pat Garratt and Friends on Monday, 17 November 2025

“Going in!” is a collection of short stories written and collected by Pat during his decade of surfing at Muizenberg, which was cut short in April 2024 when he suffered a stroke while surfing.

Speakers on the evening include Pat Garratt, Gary van Rooyen, Nigel Rudling and Birnie Shelly. Our MC for the night is Dr Helgo Schomer. There will be 75 signed copies available for purchase (R250.00 per copy) on the evening.

Pat Garratt is a man of the sea. From childhood holidays fishing at Ramsgate on the KwaZulu Natal south coast, to two years of commercial fishing, and a professional life that included marine biological research and becoming the first curator, and then director, of the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, the sea and its creatures have always been part of his life. But it was only at the age of 63 that Pat started learning to surf. He immersed himself in this new-found passion, discovering not only the exhilaration of a new sport, but a deep connection to Muizenberg and its surfing community.
