Medal winning SA Junior Surfing Team arrive back in South Africa on Tuesday May 31
The South African junior surfing team arrives home Tuesday May 31 with an unprecedented four medals won at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships which was completed Punta Hermosa in Peru on Saturday.
Team SA finished runner-up to hosts Peru to claim the team silver medal for the first time and also provided a finalist in each of the three individual divisions. Dylan Lightfoot and Bianca Buitendag earned silver medals in the U16 Boys and U18 Girls respectively while team captain Davey Brand took the bronze in the U18 Boys.
The four medal haul is the best return by a South African junior surfing team in the nine year history of the event while the silver medal in the team standings is the first time South Africa has finished better than fourth in the annual gathering of the world’s best surfers aged 18-and-under.
The ISA event was the biggest yet staged with 276 athletes from 27 countries participating.
The SA team will touch down at OR Tambo at 3pm Tuesday on flight SA225 from Sao Paulo before connecting with their respective domestic flights to Cape Town at 5.15pm and Durban at 6pm.
The bulk of the group, including silver medalist Dylan Lightfoot and Bronze medalist Davey Brand, the team captain, will arrive at Cape Town airport at 7.30pm on a Kulula flight.
Silver medal winner Bianca Buitendag and team mate Sarah Baum have travelled from Peru to Europe where they will be competing in a number of International events in Portugal and France.
Four members of the SA team will be in action in the Rip Curl Gromsearch event which takes place in the Southern Peninsula this weekend
The 2011 South African Junior Team was assisted in their preparation, training and participation at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships by funding from the NLDTF (Lotto). Kit and other items were provided by Surfing South Africa, Quiksilver, Skullcandy and Powerbalance.
Surfing South Africa is the recognized governing body for the sport in South Africa and is a member of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). Surfing South Africa is a member of the International Surfing Association (ISA) which is recognized globally as the governing body of the sport.
