Strong Eastern Province team win Mandela Bay Trophy for the third year in a row at the 2011 Billabong SA Grommet Games.

Hosts Eastern Province dominated the 2011 Billabong SA Grommet Games in Port Elizabeth over the Easter weekend as they convincingly retained the Mandela Bay Best Team trophy for the third year in a row. The Nelson Mandela Bay Trophy is awarded to the provincial team with the highest combination of scores from the individual surfing results as well as the results from the Tag Team, Paddle Battle and Beach Flags.
The team from KZN Central came second with Boland ending third ahead of Western Province. Border was fifth, Southern Cape came sixth followed by Southern KZN and Zululand.

Over 120 girls and boys from eight provinces took part in the annual event which is Surfing South Africa’s premier entry level inter provincial tournament.

Groms before their heat

Sponsorship from Billabong and funding support from Sport and Recreation South Africa and the Lotto ensured that the 19th SA Grommet Games was a huge success once again. The event remains one of the highlights of the annual Surfing South Africa event calendar.

The tournament got off to a great start at the opening function on Wednesday April 20 when the teams were addressed by legendary Big Wave Champion Grant “Twiggy” Baker. Baker has ridden waves in excess of 60 foot and is regarded as one of the World’s best big wave riders. Such is the modest champion’s popularity that he was mobbed by the young surfers at the function who pressed him for autographs and had their photos taken with their hero.
Baker’s attendance at the opening function, held in the Amphitheatre at the Boardwalk, was made possible by Billabong.
During the event itself competitors had to battle gale force winds on Day One of the contest but from Day Two the wind backed off and the final three days were blessed with warm weather and contestable surf at Pollock Beach.
Thanks to the efforts of hosts Eastern Province Surfing Council under the guidance of President Johnny Bakker, event Secretary Shirley Fairall and other support staff, Contest Director Etienne Venter, Head Judge Donovan Zoetmulder and Surfing South Africa’s Tasha Mentasti were able to complete the tournament without a hitch.

The Western Province Team was awarded the fair Play trophy for their energy, enthusiasm and support of not only their own team members but of the contest as a whole. This award is a credit to the management of Western Province Surfing who had their team well organized and highly motivated for the tournament. Selected after local trials in accordance with the strict guidelines set out by surfing South Africa, Western Province were deserving and popular winners of this coveted award.

In the individual surfing categories Hilton Pelser of Boland won the Under 16 Boys Division with Jade Story of KZN Central winning the Under 16 Girls title. Zane Manuel won the Under 14 Boys final and fellow Eastern Province surfer Crystal Hulett came out on top in the Under 14 Girls Division.
The Under 12 Boys winner was Jose Faulkner of Eastern Province whose outstanding surfing throughout the tournament earned him the Surfer of the Contest Award. Another Eastern Province surfer, Ashleigh Vaughan won the Under 12 girls division. Saxton Randall of KZN Central won the Under 10 title and Western Province surfer Alex Townsend took the Under 8 crown.

Eastern Province successfully defended their 2010 Tag Team title beating Boland into second place. KZN Central was third and Western Province came fourth.

Ashleigh Vaughan of Eastern Province won the Junior Girls Beach Flags and Banele Mabanya of Southern KZN took honours in the Junior Boys Flags.
In the Senior Girls Flags Caitlin Beukes of Boland came out on top with Kalabo Tieli of Border winning the Senior Boys Flags gold medal. Ashleigh Vaughan added a fifth gold medal to her haul when she won the Girls Paddle Battle and U16 surfing champion Hilton Pelser of Boland took home a
second gold when he won the Boys Paddle Battle.

The Sportsmanship Award went to Kai Woolf of Eastern Province and special Billabong Performance Awards were made to Josh Fairley and Manoa Robb of Western Province, Rewaldo Abersalie of Eastern Province and Saxton Randall of KZN Central.
Bruce Campbell was presented with the Most Dedicated Judge Award.

The SA Grommet Games is a tournament with a primary focus on transformation and development within the sport, and provincial structures are set strict criteria when selecting their teams for the four days of competition.
While the main focus of the event is on surfing, participation in events such as a Paddle Battle, Beach Flags and Tag Team is also included in the activities. The most participative team is awarded the Fair Play Trophy while the team that gathers the most points from all the activities takes
home the Nelson Mandela Bay Trophy as the champions of the tournament.

The tournament is also used to identify and reward surfers who show potential and who have excelled and selects a South African Development
